Personal History: Joan grew up in Portland until her parents divorced when she was eight. Since her mother was deemed 'irresponsible' and 'flighty', she moved with her father to Forks where she grew up with Jessica and Mike, who lived next door. A lover of fantasy and comic book heroes, she wishes for something more exciting in her dull, Forks life than the day-old town gossip.

When the Cullens arrive in her freshmen year at Forks High, everyone is buzzing about the new, gorgeous, 'dazzling' transfers. Joan is eager to meet the newcomers, hoping they'll bring the excitement she's craving. But one night, as she's taking a walk, she meets one of the Cullens under unfortunate circumstances.

After the encounter, she has shied away from the Cullens and any form of popularity (e.g. Jessica's new group of friends), focusing solely on her grades and working tech for the school shows, in hopes of getting her mind off what she knows about the Cullens.

*note: Just because she is not in the 'in'-crowd doesn't mean she's the most compliant of girls.
