| "What happened?" Alice asked curiously. "What did your dad say?"
I hope he got the crazy bitch arrested! she thought venomously.

| Joan pushed her bangs out of her face as she told Alice, "My dad's at an art convention in Sacramento for the weekend. But one of our neighbors, Jessica's dad, took my mom down to the local police station so I can go back home."
'And not a minute too soon. Thanks, Dad. You're the best,' she thought happily.

| "That's awesome!" Alice grinned. "Wanna go back to torturing Eddy?" she chuckled as she let her imagination wander...
"ALICE! I SWEAR, I WILL KILL YOU!" Edward screeched.

| Joan shook her head, saying, "I think we've done enough. And I actually think of Edward as a friend so I don't want him to hate me from all the mental torturing.."
'No matter how much it makes me laugh,' she added.

| "Oh fine," Alice pouted, then smiled. "Shall we go bother Emmett?" she teased. "He's awful fun to annoy."
At least I'm cheering her up.

| Joan gave a small smile and a shudder at the mention of Emmett's name as she said, "I'd rather not walk in on them, just to annoy him, thank you very much."
She asked curiously, "What else is there to do around here?"

| "Well, we could listen to music, or watch TV, or play Wii," Alice suggested. "Like any of those ideas?"
Oh dear, I have to entertain a human...YEY! Alice cheered in her head.

| "Do you have any movies?" Joan asked, "I haven't sat down and watched one in a very long time..."
'Well between school and tutoring and my part-time job at the coffeehouse and all these random field trips and oh yeah, finding out vampires go to my school, I haven't had enough time to watch a freaking movie,' she thought cynically.

| "Yeah," Alice said as she opened up the entertainment system in her room to reveal the DVDs she had, "What kind of movies do you have? I'm afraid I have just chick flicks, and sappy romance movies. Oh! I do have some horror movies, but not a lot, just the classics like Dracula, Night Of The Living Dead, and Nightmare On Elm Street," Alice said as she skimmed through her DVDs. "What do you wanna watch?" | |

| Joan chuckled silently, thinking, 'Dracula? Night of the Living Dead? Way to be hardcore in your vampire horror movies, Alice...'
She walked over, joining Alice at the DVDs shelves and pulled out one with great interest. She looked over the cover and asked, "Miyasaki's Spirited Away? I wouldn't pin you as the Japanese cartoon movie type..." 'I haven't seen a Miyasaki movie since I was... eight, actually.'
"Mind if we watch this one?" Joan waved the DVD in front of Alice.

| "Oh, sure," Alice agreed as she popped the DVD into her TV. "I'll go get some popcorn," she offered as she got up and left. "I'll be right back, okay?"
Alice was deep in thought as she walked towards the kitchen, Huh, this has been a really weird day...first the voices, then the beach, now this...Who'd a thunk? she chuckled to herself as the popcorn popped in the microwave. The timer went off, nearly startling Alice. She laughed aloud at the thought of a microwave scaring her, then poured the popcorn into the bowl and went back up the stairs, taking care not to be heard by her family. They don't need to know anything... she told herself.
"I'm back!" she announced cheerfully as she entered her room.

| While Alice went to get some popcorn, Joan watched the previews roll on the screen. She shivered a bit from the sudden chill in the room. She reached over and pulled one of the convenient placed, folded blankets out of the basket, wrapping it tightly around her.
'Huh... They probably never turn on the heat or lights 'cause... well, they're vampires...' She reasoned at the sudden drop in temperature. She sighed, zoning out as she stared out the massive window on the west wall of the room.
"Honey! Hurry up! The movie's starting!" Her mother called to her father in the kitchen. Joan was curled up on her mother's lap, wrapped in a thick, wool blanket that her grandmother had knitted for her this past Christmas.
Her father soon came back into the room with two bowls of popcorn in hand as he explained, "Well, the popcorn can only cook so fast." He placed a bowl in Joan's eager hands before wrapping an arm around his wife's shoulders and placing a light kiss on her forehead.
Soon, the title credits began to roll and-
"Is there any particular reason why you're reminiscing about happier times?" Edward's voice came out of nowhere, startling her so much that she fell off the bed. Edward grabbed her in time, though and gently tugged her back on the bed.
"Don't... do that!" Joan wheezed out, holding a hand over her thundering heart. Once she began to breathe in and out slowly again, she smacked Edward lightly, saying, "And it's rude to go into people's minds without their permission!"
"I'm sorry," Edward said playfully although there was some underlying sincerity, "I'll ask you next time. I promise." They both turned to the movie screen which was still playing previews. "What are you watching?" He asked curiously.
"Spirited Away. A childhood movie I wanted to watch again," Joan explained to him when Alice came in with a bowl of popcorn, saying, "I'm back!"
Joan smiled and gratefully took the bowl of popcorn from her as she asked, "Are you going to stay and watch the movie?"
He shrugged amiably, "Why not? I have nothing better to do..."

| "Hey Eddy," Alice said breezily as she sat down between him and Joan. "Eavesdropping again?" she teased as she grabbed a bit of popcorn and threw it at him. "Curiosity killed the cat."
"And satisfaction brought it back," Edward returned.
"And Alice provoked the Volturi and blamed the cat because it was annoying her," Alice countered.
"You wouldn't!" Edward's eyes widened in pretend shock.
Alice rolled her eyes. "No, Carlisle would stop me, wouldn't he?"
"True..." Edward said smugly.
"Let's just watch the movie, huh?" Alice didn't like losing, especially not to Edward, whiny little-
"Hey!" he interjected. "I can STILL hear your thoughts, remember?"
"I'm telling Dad you used your powers on me!" Alice teased.

| Joan watched the exchange with great interest and wanted to laugh but felt it would be inappropriate at the moment. But something Alice said interested her.
She asked, "Wait, what's the Volturi?"

| "The Volturi is like the Vampire Mafia," Alice explained. "They basically set up the vampire rules and enforce them," she placed unusual strain on the word.
"Yeah, enforce," Edward echoed, as if in the midst of a memory.

| "Oh," Joan said quietly, noticing the glum expressions on her friends' faces. She turned back to the movie, hoping it would catch her interest but one question haunted her in the back of her mind.
"Should I be afraid?" She asked aloud.

| Alice and Edward exchanged a quick glance before Alice replied, "No, Jo, there's nothing to be afraid of," she faked a smile. "Right, Eddy?"
"Right, nothing at all," Edward smiled at Joan.

| Joan huffed, crossing her arms across her chest as she turned back to the movie with mildly interest.
'Why does everyone have to hide the truth? Thinking it won't hurt me if they don't tell me... Ha, my mom said she loved me. Look where-' She could feel tears coming at the thought of her mother so she stopped thinking about it, wiping at her eyes with her sleeve.
Joan said softly, "I wish you guys wouldn't lie to me..."

| "We're not lying, honest," Alice hastened to say.
"It's just that...if the Volturi knew...that you knew...about us...we're all toast," Edward explained.
Alice nodded miserably.

| "As in... dead? All of you? How? Why?" Joan gulped dryly. 'So there really is a threat to me knowing all of this... I knew it was too good to be true!' She thought nervously, wrapping the blanket tight around her shaking body. | |

| "You see, the Volturi are really strict," Alice began shakily. "They want vampires to be completely secluded from humans in order to keep the secret."
"They'll do anything to keep the secret- lie, kill," Edward interjected.
"How?" Alice repeated Joan's earlier question. "Well, you're not so difficult to kill- they'd just suck your blood," she closed her eyes queasily at that. When she opened her eyes, she went on, "Edward and I, however, are another matter. To kill a vampire, one must tear apart the limbs, decapitate the vamp, and burn him or her."
"It's not so hard- if you're a vampire," Edward cut in.
Alice noticed Joan shaking, "Calm down, honey, no one is going to find out that you know!" she hugged the poor human.

| "All... all right..." Joan said, trying to smile and force herself to be happy. But her insides began to churn with anxiety and stress and it wouldn't leave even when she stopped thinking about it and turned to the TV to watch the movie.
Near the end, Joan couldn't take the pain in her stomach any more. So she asked Alice, "Hey, I'm not feeling so good... Could you drive me home? I have to get up early any way..."
'Wow, Mike... Your party is actually going to do me one good thing,' she thought tiredly as she gathered up her jacket and cell phone, looking out to see it still pouring. 'Would it be vain if I thought the sky was crying for my pain?' Joan thought curiously.

| "Sure," Alice agreed as she turned to leave with Joan, examining Edward's face for any reasons behind this. He shook his head slightly, indicating that they would talk later. She nodded and went down to the garage with Joan, worrying about Joan's mental health. Alice started the car and pressed the gas, driving fast as she could.
"Are you really alright?" Alice asked Joan anxiously. "Tell the truth, please."

| "Honestly, Alice? You tell me," Joan said bluntly as she leaned her head on the window with a tired, mocking smirk.
She continued cynically, "I get into an argument with a vampire about who gets to make my choices, my estranged mother comes and tries to take me home with her, I... Really, I don't even know..."
Joan took a deep breath, trying to hold herself together until she got home as she said firmly, "I'll just sleep on it. I always feel better after I sleep."

| "Alright, if you're sure," Alice said, unsure. "If you can get away tomorrow, please stop by. We'd be happy to have you over again. And please, do NOT worry about the Volturi, okay?"
She sped off home after Joan was safe in her house, thinking about what she told Joan. Damn, I shouldn't have told her about the Volturi! she swore in her head as she approached the mansion and got out of the car.
"Yes, you should have," Edward said from behind her. "She needed to know, our LIVES depend on it, Alice. You know that."
"Yeah, but I didn't know she'd react like that. Well, I did, but I was hoping I was wrong," she admitted.
"Alice Cullen, wrong?" Edward chuckled. "That'd be a first."
"Shut up!" Alice laughed as the two vampires went inside the house.
