Joan whistled yet again at the stacks of journals that Edward had in one corner and his entire music collection over a really nice, expensive looking stereo. His walls were mostly windows, which gave the room a sort of open feeling.

'Jesus, it almost makes me want to be part of their family,' she thought, impressed as she reached up to examine some of Edward's albums.

Alice and Edward watched Joan go through his records wordlessly, thinking.

Huh, I wonder what she's thinking, Alice pondered.

Eh, I wonder why Alice wants to know what Joan's thinking....oh, wait...I'm the only one who hears voices... Edward mused.

"Joan?" Alice said tentatively, "How do you feel about meeting our family?"

"Huh?" Joan turned around, startled almost losing her grip on the vintage Beatles' record. She pushed her hair behind her ear nervously, "Ummm, I guess..."

'Holy crap, holy crap, holy CRAP! From one family problem to meeting another family, am I ready to this?' She asked herself, mentally panicking. But she took a deep breath and told herself, 'I can do this. I haven't done anything wrong for them to want to kill me... Wait, bad mental image...'

"Chill, Joan," Edward laughed. "I swear, you have an anxiety disorder."

"Well, not many humans get to encounter vampires up close," Alice reminded him. "Come on, they won't bite!" she joked as she grabbed Joan's hand and led her down to the living room. "Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, Emmett," she glanced over at Joan, "Would you like to meet Jasper?"

What sort of question is that? Of course she doesn't! Ah well, can't hurt to ask...right?

"Of course," Joan said tentatively, "I did say I'd like to meet the entire Cullen family." She took a deep breath through her nose and told herself to relax as she glanced at all the beautiful faces around her.

'Wow,' she thought bewildered and somewhat sullen, 'These guys lower my self-esteem faster than I can even blink. No wonder people are jealous of them...'

Her inner voice argued, 'It's only because they're predators and they need to draw their prey in!'

'Not helping!' She yelled at herself.

"Jasper," Alice added. "Well, we're all here," she surveyed her family. "Family, meet Joan. Joan, meet family."

"Hello Joan, it's a pleasure to meet you, I'm Carlisle Cullen," he introduced himself, shaking her hand. "And this-" he gestured to the woman standing next to him,"is my wife, Esme."

"Hey Joan, you remember us, right?" Emmett and Rosalie stepped up to Joan.

"Hello," Jasper said quietly, maintaining his distance. "Nice to see you again, Joan."

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Doctor and Mrs. Cullen," she said warmly before turning to Emmett as she smiled weakly, a bit put off by Rosalie's glare.

"It's a bit hard to forget you Emmett," 'Especially when you remind me of a bear,' she added before quickly telling Rosalie, "And you too, Rosalie."

'This is a bit overwhelming,' she admitted, 'I can only greet so many people at once!'

Finally, Joan turned to Jasper. She froze up; the last time she saw him, he was in his most predatory state.

'Say something, you idiot! Don't stare!' Her inner voice screamed. She managed to mutter out, "Hello, Jasper..."

Alice smiled. "And now that we're all acquainted...Rosalie, Esme, shall we make over Joan?" she grinned as she grabbed Joan's hand and pulled her up the staircase to her room with Rosalie and Esme following. "This will be fun!"

Joan stumbled out, suddenly breathless by the strange turn of events, "Wait what?" She didn't seem to mind that Alice was practically dragging her up the stairs.

All she could really think about was how Jasper stared at her with such morbid guilt that it made her feel horrible inside. 'I don't know what I've done,' she told herself sadly, 'But I feel like... it's my fault that Jasper feels so...'

Alice glanced over her shoulder at Joan, and was shocked to see Joan's facial expression. "Man, I know you hate makeovers, but you don't need to look suicidal," she joked.

"Alice, dear, I don't think it's the makeover," Esme cut in calmly,"Am I right?" she asked Joan.

Joan was pulled out her reverie by Esme's question. "Oh," she said a bit startled, "I'm fine, really..." She really didn't need people worrying over her right now.

'Only I can take of myself.'

"Well, if you're sure," Esme said worriedly as Alice and Rosalie got out the makeup.

"Girly time!" Alice smiled as she brandished her makeup brush, and immediately went to work on Joan's face with Rosalie's help. Esme watched quietly as Joan protested, but she was no match for the two vampiresses, especially when they were hellbent on something.

After trying to fuss with the determined vampires, Joan just gave up and let Alice and Rosalie have their way with her. She sat perfectly still, following all of Alice's instructions numbly.

"Sweetie! Why won't you put the dress on?"

Joan sat up straight, apologizing to Alice who was putting on eyeliner. 'Where did that come from?'

"Please put on the dress for Mommy?"

Joan was seven years old, sitting with a pout on her bed as her mother was crouched down next to her, holding up to very pretty yet frilly dresses. Her mother wanted her to dress up for her grandmother coming over but her daughter had refused quite poignantly.

She sighed and put the dresses down, finally asking, "What do you want to wear?"

Joan's face brightened up, as she jumped down from her bed and ran into the closet. Her mother took her daughter's place until she came back.

Joan stumbled out, holding up a black, blue, and white striped skirt with a matching blue sweater; her father had bought it for her birthday a couple months ago.

Her mother smiled somewhat tersely, helping her daughter into the clothes.

'Why am I thinking about that now?' Joan thought distractedly.

Alice was putting on eyeliner when Joan sat up suddenly, ruining the effect. "Sorry," Joan had apologized.

Alice clucked her tongue. "It's alright," she reassured Joan, who seemed pretty spaced out.

After about an hour of Alice's and Rose's hard work, they had finished making over Joan. "What do you think?" Alice asked Esme and Joan as she turned the mirror on Joan, revealing her new look of soft pink blush, a creamy complexion, and long lashes.

"Wow," was the only response Joan could come up with at the moment, both startled by the sudden interruption of her reminiscing and the fact that she looked so... different.

She reached out to touch the mirror's reflection when she realized, 'It's really me.'

"Wow," Joan repeated, turning to Alice and Rosalie with a warm smile, "You guys did a fantastic job. I almost don't even recognize myself."

"Thanks," Alice and Rosalie said modestly, smiling.

"Shall we show the others?" Alice asked Rosalie, who nodded.

"Guys!! Come up here!" Alice cried out the doorway. Almost immediately Carlisle, Edward, Emmett, and Jasper entered the room.

"Yes Alice? What's wrong?" Carlisle said confusedly.

"Nothing's wrong, Carlisle," Edward explained. "They just want to show off."

"Shut up!" Rosalie hit Edward with a pillow as everyone else watched and laughed.

"What do you guys think?" Alice gestured to the made over Joan.

Joan laughed at the exchange between Rosalie and Edward, thinking, 'Man, it's like watching a sitcom... About a family of vampires. Who'd of thunk?'

"What do you guys think?" Alice asked, gesturing to the made over Joan. Joan tried not to look away under their intense, observant gaze but it was hard.

'I'm not some new species! Why are they examining me like I'm the most fascinating thing on Earth?' She thought, feeling her ears turn their usual, embarrassed pink.

"She's beautiful," Carlisle was the first to talk.

"Indeed," Edward and Emmett nodded. Jasper maintained his distance, though he smiled kindly at Joan.

"Thanks, guys," Alice smiled at her family. Woohoo! It worked!! she cheered mentally.

Joan's heart warmed immensely at the guys' nice compliments. Even Jasper's detached but kind smile didn't faze her one bit. 'I guess dressing up is good every once in a while.'

Joan turned back to Alice and smiled softly. She teased Alice, "Any other ways you want to torture me?"

"Well, I'd take you shopping, but you might murder me," Alice joked playfully.

"Shopping?" Rose perked up immediately.

"No, Rose, the mall's probably closed, and Joan probably wants to go to sleep. Am I correct?" Alice smiled at Joan.

Joan nodded gratefully at Alice's suggestion. Rosalie looked a little glum but Emmett came in and they both went out together, happy and-

'I don't even what to think about what they're probably going to do,' Joan told herself but winced at the mental image, 'Ah, too late!'

Alice noticed Joan wincing. "You imagined it, didn't you? At least you didn't accidentally walk in on them," she closed her eyes, trying hard to forget. "Worst night of my existence."

"Do you really want to go to sleep now?" Alice asked. "It's only nine o'clock..."

Joan shook her head before asking, "Wait, you walked in on them?" She chuckled a bit nervously before asking, "Might I ask why? Or is it too horrible to recall?"

Joan thought about Alice walking in on them and began to laugh at the image of her imagination. 'This day goes from horrible to awesome just by thinking of sex... Wow, I really am human.'

Edward yelled upstairs, "STOP IMAGINING IT ALREADY! I already get it enough from THEM!"

This only made Joan laugh even more so she chose to sit down on Alice's couch so she wouldn't hurt herself in her fit of laughter.

Alice burst out laughing as well. "God, were you imagining me walking in on them?" she managed to say between guffaws. "And they were doing it in the middle of the freaking living room! Kind of hard NOT noticing," she began to relive the memory.

"ALICE! FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, STOP THAT!" Edward bellowed.

Joan finally stopped laughing, wiping the tears that had fallen down her face from laughing so hard. She gave some final chuckles before saying, "Oh, man... I haven't laughed in such a-"

Suddenly, her phone started going off in her pocket. 'I forgot I even had it,' she thought as she pulled it out and checked the Caller ID. It was only her dad.

She answered it, "Dad?"

"Hey, sweetie. I'm sorry I left so suddenly. Mr. Phillips called in sick so I had to go to the Sacramento art convention in his place. And as for mom-"

Joan heard the guilt in his voice at the mention of her mother so she comforted him, saying, "Don't worry, I'm fine."

"Are you still at the house?"

"No, I'm at a friend's house."

"Good, it's probably better AND safer that way."

"Dad, how long are you going to be gone?"

"Just the weekend, sweetpea. I called up Mr. Stanley ten minutes ago to go over and escort your mother out so you can go back home tomorrow safely. The court already knows."

She let out a breath of relief, "Okay, Dad. I love you."

"I love you too, sweetheart. And I always will."

"I know, Dad. And I will too."

"I'll call you tomorrow to check in, okay?"

"Okay dad. Bye."

"Bye." She hung up her phone and her shoulders slumped into a more relaxed stance. 'At least I won't have to deal with that for a while,' she thought wearily.
