| "Alright then, I'll begin at the beginning. I was born Mary Alice Brandon in 1901. When I was a teen, I began having visions, and so I was sent off to a loony bin and considered dead by my parents," her voice cracked at this. "I was hunted down by a carnivorous vampire and changed by a vampiric worker at the asylum. I honestly don't remember any of that; I don't remember anything of being human," Alice sighed wistfully. "In 1948, I found Jasper in a diner in Boston, and we fell in love, married, and went off to meet the Cullens, who I had seen in a vision. They accepted us, and we've been together as a family ever since," she glossed over her history, not wanting to go into specifics. "I can see the future, but it changes. Anything else you want to know?" | |

| "When you say you can see the future," Joan started, feeling somewhat enthralled at the new information, "Do you mean you can see the entire future or just predetermined events, like it changes if someone makes a different decision than what they were originally going to?"
When she caught her breath, Joan realized how much of a dork she might have sounded. Her face flushed as she stuttered out, "Sorry... I'm... kind of fascinated by supernatural powers..." She made a thoughtful glance over at the white boxes in the corner that were filled to the brim with all her beloved comic books.
Joan continued, turning her focus back to Alice as she leaned back on the headboard of her bed, "So what about the Cullens? What do you think of them?"

| "Predetermined futures, no future is for sure," Alice clarified. "And the Cullens? They're wonderful people...for the most part. Emmett and Rose are just SO lovey-dovey all the time, it's sickening! And Carlisle just HAS to rub in his PERFECT self-control in front of Jasper so Esme and I have to intervene! AND Jasper's always off with Emmett so we can NEVER have some alone time!" Alice ranted, then realized how insane she must have sounded. "But, yeah, I love the Cullens..." her mood changed drastically. | |

| Joan chuckled quietly, giving her an empathetic look, "Well, not all families are perfect. Nor are all relationships." 'I would know,' she added quietly to herself, 'Mike and Jessica, Mom even!' But she had moved on; she could live without these relationships. That's what she kept telling herself anyway.
Suddenly, a question slipped out of her mouth before she could even think, "Do you love Jasper?" 'Where in the HELL did that come from?'

| Alice thought a moment, contemplating this. True, she did see him in a vision, but the circumstances were shady at best, stalkerish at worst.
"Yes, I do love Jasper," Alice finally decided. "True, he's not perfect, being male," she smiled, "But he listens to me, and he understands me, you know?" | |

| "Not really," Joan said honestly, running her hand through her hair. She continued, "I've really never known 'love'. I've known 'like' but never 'love' except maybe from my dad..."
She paused for a moment, thinking about what she had just said. 'Man, my life sucks. It's so boring... I bet the vampire doesn't give two turds about me or my life...'
She shook her head, saying, "So what's it like?"

| "Well, it's like you can see yourself spending the rest of your life with that person, forever and ever. Which is kind of literal when you're one of the undead," Alice chuckled. "Enough about me, tell me about your life." | |

| Joan was a bit taken aback by the sudden change of topic. She managed to stutter out, "L-like wh-what?" She took a deep breath and tried to relax (well relax as much as she could around a vampire), "I mean, what do you want to know about me?"

| "Everything. Where you lived, your relationship with your parents, boys you've liked and/or dated," Alice listed. "Any one of those would do nicely." Huh, I wonder what kind of guy she's into... Alice wondered to herself. We'll find out soon, wont' we? | |

| 'She sure is... direct,' Joan thought, smiling thoughtfully, 'Probably doesn't take crap from anyone after being alive for so long...'
She folded her legs Indian styled and started, "I've only lived in two places: here and with my mom in Portland, Maine. Portland's beautiful... It's so quaint but loud, oh God, the people get so loud... I don't know, Forks is nice too. And not as loud... Maybe I just have a thing for being near the ocean...
"I love my dad. With all my heart. He's the only man in my life who has every right to say that. He's just so... Oh, where do I begin?" She paused for a moment, searching for the right words. She didn't seem to wonder if she was boring Alice to tears. She just kept talking, "My mom put him through a lot of crap for a very long time and he took it, because he thought he loved her. But after a while, it just got to be too much so he just stopped and left her.
"She was heartbroken. She's always been so dependent on others and no one's ever left her before..." I muttered a bit bitterly, "You'd think she'd learn to rely on herself more but no, she goes and marries the next big, strapping man who walks into her life..."
Joan shook her head and continued, "Right. My dad. Took me in and raised me to be my own person. Sure, I probably missed out in the makeup and girly section of my life but I haven't really missed it that much. I like the person who I am today. I really do. I don't know how many girls my age get to say that.
"Anyway, guys I've dated? Few and far between. First was in eighth grade and it was Mike Newton. Just the whole 'let's try being more than friends' thing. Didn't work out too well." She giggled at their first awkward kiss, and how he had missed her lips entirely and got her cheek instead.
"Next one was Jared. Fucking prick, pardon my French. He was definitely one of the bigger mistakes in my life... And the last one was Lance, last year. He was okay, one of those safe boyfriends, if you will. Nice, considerate but boring. Doesn't do much outside student leadership and his other thousand clubs."
She sighed, brushing her hair absentmindedly, "I don't know what I want, really, in a guy. For now, I'm more focused on getting into college." She gave a slight grimace at the mention of school.

| "Mike Newton? Seriously?" Alice giggled, then sobered up. "I'm sorry about your parents," she said awkwardly, trying to imagine a world without Jasper. And failing. | |

| "I've gotten over it... Nothing to dwell... I mean, both my parents and Mike." She laughed at that thought. She fiddled with her fingers as she asked, "So... where does that leave us?" 'Hopefully, not me dying...' She thought a bit sardonically.

| "Make over?" Alice grinned as she got out her makeup bag, foreseeing that she would need it. "Don't worry, I won't eat you or anything like that. It'll be fun, I'll teach you how to be girly!" Alice's eyes had a maniacal gleam to them once she began talking about makeovers. | |

| 'Oh no... I did not see this coming...' Joan thought, horrified at the mascara and lash curler Alice held in her delicate hands. She made a silent prayer in her head, 'God, please save me. Send something to stop her! PLEASE!'
Suddenly, her dad called up the stairs, "Jo, sweetie. It's getting late. Tell your tutor buddy good night 'cause you need to get up early tomorrow..." 'When do I not need to get up early?' She thought out of the blue but then, looked back up at the ceiling and rejoiced in her head, 'Thank you, God!'
"So, I'll see you tomorrow Alice?" Joan said a bit smug as she led the pixie Cullen out of her room and down the stairs towards the front door.

| Alice's shoulders slumped in defeat. "Good night, then Joan. I'll see you tomorrow," she smiled smugly. With this, she walked out to her car and sped off, thinking over what happened that night. Alice decided not to go home yet, and drove around town, mulling over what Joan said and asked. Do I love Jasper? Mike Newton? No makeovers? whirled through her head, around and around. | |

| -------The Next Day------
'Last night was definitely some messed up hallucination...' Joan thought tiredly as she pulled into the school's parking lot. Some jerk had parked in her normal spot so she was forced to park near the Cullens.
'Shit, stupid coincidence...' She groaned in irritation as she opened her car door a fraction of the way so she wouldn't ding the shiny Volvo. 'I should, though,' she thought deviously, 'Just to see how Edward Prissy Pants would react.' She caught herself after that thought, 'What the hell am I doing, joking about the Cullens?! They could KILL me!' She sighed and leaned back into her seat, staring up at the car's roof.
"I am acting so bipolar," Joan admitted to herself with an uneasy grin. "Well, can't blame me. I didn't exactly expect to have to go to school with a bunch of vampires." She reached back and grabbed her bag as the warning bell rang. 'They are throwing me off balance everywhere I go!'
Swinging the bag over her shoulder and locking her minivan, she walked up slowly to the main school building. She racked her brain for what she had first period. 'Crap! I have English with Jasper. Dammit...' She mentally groaned at having to be in the same room with a vampire... again.
'Wait...' She reasoned with herself (something she had been doing on a regular basis nowadays) 'That whole thing with Alice last night... I was just imagining it... Right?' She shook her head as she walked into the classroom just as the bell rang. She glanced back and saw Jasper sitting in the far back as usual so she opted for a seat in the front.
'It's going to be another long day...'

| "Ugh," Alice groaned when she put down her novel and looked at her clock. Looks like it's time for school, she thought glumly to herself, not wanting to go to school. She really didn't want to face Joan and know that last night actually happened. Zombie-like, she got dressed and went out to Edward's Volvo, not noticing the odd stares from her siblings.
"What happened last night?" Rosalie asked curiously. "Eh, nothing," Alice shrugged. "We talked about our lives, nothing good. No, we don't have to relocate...for now." "Oh, good," Rosalie was pleased as they pulled into the parking lot. "Ready for Calc, Alice?" "Not really..." Alice admitted. "Do we really have to go to school?" "Yes, it's the only place where people can see how pretty I am!" Rosalie growled. "Fine, fine," Alice backed off.
She spent her whole math class thinking about her conversation with Joan the night before, ignoring Rose when she began bitching about how uncool math was. | |

| "Well good morning school! Another day to learn something... great. I hate school!" Jasper moaned as he entered the school and walked to his locker.
He knew he was late, but decided to leave it be. After all, his teacher wouldn't really care. It was Maths after all, and Mr Taylor was quite lenient, and a fun teacher, as long as you did his homework. He made Mathematics Jasper's favourite subject.
Jasper checked his maths book with his homework in was ready, before he began walking to class. |

| "Jasper? What are you doing here?" Alice asked quizzically as she pushed Jasper out of the math classroom and into the neighboring English classroom. There she saw Joan and waved cheerfully before heading back to Calc.

| It was lunchtime again or the end of the day for Joan. So instead of staying to have the too greasy pizza and chat with the juniors who had suddenly decided that they were all best friends again, she walked out into the parking lot, towards her minivan.
'Gotta get my mind off this,' she convinced herself, 'Gotta get out of here...'
She unlocked the car and threw her stuff into the passenger's seat, whispering, "Road trip, anyone?" She turned her keys in the ignition and reached over to close the door when it was suddenly stuck. Actually it was held open by a hand. A very pale hand.
Joan looked up to be met with dark golden eyes and a mess of bronze hair; her breath caught as he told her, "We need to talk. Move over." Joan was so paralyzed that Edward had to lift her up off her seat and into the passenger's as he got into the driver's seat and drove off campus.
The first thought that crossed her mind was, 'Why the hell is he here?'

| Alice looked out the window to where Edward and Joan were, unsurprised to see Edward drive off with Joan. Be careful, Eddy, she thought anxiously. She saw Edward turn to look at her and nodded.
"Hey, where's Edward going?" Bella asked.
"To talk to Joan," Alice explained calmly.
"Does she know?" Bella gasped.
"Yes, yes she does."
"Edward's not going to...?"
"No, he's not. Calm down Bella."
"Okay," Bella tried yoga breathing to relax her.
"It'll be okay," Alice reassured Bella confidently. | |

| "I'm here because I am concerned," Edward replied smoothly, gliding into the right hand lane on the highway. He continued, looking over at Joan, who was staring out the window, clutching the seat instinctively, "I am concerned that because of the crowd you hang out with, you have the liability to tell them all the 'gossip' about us and-"
Joan started laughing; she had no idea why. She should've been terrified. 'I should be a lot of things,' she reasoned with herself. Edward looked a bit startled, eying her like she had gone insane. Which she probably had.
Joan coughed, her laughter ceasing as she asked, "You're afraid I'll tell? Haven't Alice and I already been over this? I'm terrified of you more than I am willing to gossip with Jessica and her... clones."
Edward looked absolutely baffled, "But you were- She was with you and Mike and Tyler yesterday. Surely, you are such good friends with her that you will-"
"Yeah, right. She dumped me last year to hang with the 'cool' kids. I stayed exactly where I wanted to be," Joan explained, "Yesterday was just weird but I was too worn out from arguing to say no." 'Jesus Christ,' she ran her hand through her hair, 'I cannot deal with this right. The supernatural does not help with the stress of school.'
Edward suddenly veered off towards the exit leading to Seattle, "You... You're worried more about school than you are... of us?"
Joan shrugged, leaning her head against the window, "Yes. Why is that so surprising that I care about my future more than my impending death?"
Edward answered, dumbfound, "Because you are going to die?"
Joan smiled, chuckling lightly, "Not yet, I hope. I think I have a couple more years in me before you guys think I'm an actual threat."

| "Alice! What if he's killing Joan RIGHT NOW?" Bella panicked, much to Alice's annoyance.
"He's not going to, I can see that. Now calm down Bella, or I shall have to smack you," Alice threatened sweetly. Bella looked terrified of Alice. "Let's go shopping!"
"Oh God, no, Alice!" Bella looked as though she was going to cry as Alice dragged her to the woods near the school.
"Hang tight," the petite vampire warned Bella as she ran off to the Cullen house to get her car.
Once in the car, Alice stomped on the gas as Bella began hyperventilating. | |

| Edward took a deep breath in before exhaling in the blink of an eye, asking, "So you're really not going to tell?"
Joan nodded as they slowed towards the edge of some shore that was barely occupied, "Why would I? You've done nothing to me. But I have to be honest: I really am trying to block it out."
Edward asked curiously, "Why?"
Joan shrugged, opening her car door and said, "Let's take a walk." The salt air filtered through her nose, making her inhale the sweet smell and enjoy the sea breeze. She took her flip flops and walked on the beach barefoot with Edward trailing closely behind her.
Before he could ask another question, she answered his previous one, "When fantasy steps off from the page and you can no longer close the book to put it all away and pass it off as fiction, it's very terrifying. I mean, what else could be out there?" The very thought made her shiver more than the cold air.
"Nothing else hopefully," Edward gave a half-smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.

| "ALICE! NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO SHOP!" Bella screamed as Alice stopped the car in front of a mall in Seattle.
"Shut up, Bella, it's always time to shop," Alice countered.
"But Joan--"
"Is perfectly safe with Edward," Alice cut in smoothly. "Do you like this necklace?" she held up a pendant.
"What? Well, yeah, wait...ALICE STOP IT!"
"Just be happy it's not Jasper," the pixie rolled her eyes. "Then I'd be worried."
"But I thought you loved Jasper..?"
"Oh, I do with all my heart, I just don't think he'd be able to talk to Joan in an enclosed space such as a car," Alice explained.
"Oh..." Bella was quiet. | |
